Hello everyone!

This is Jina Lee (Calling Books) and Hideto Shindo, editor-in-chief of <d design travel>, who are working on the first overseas special edition.

First of all, we would like to thank you for your interest in this book and our project.

We will create <Jeju Island> in one book by focusing on "localness" and discovering where "design" is.

The official book will be released in April 2024, first in Japanese and English. (Korean version to follow)

While working on the first overseas special issue, I thought, "Can we do this?" and I knew that this book would definitely be a treasure.

This is our fifth editorial note, and it's the story of a week with Hyundai's CASPER Bijarim Khaki Matte color, conceived, executed, and supported by the <d design travel Jeju> editorial team.

CASPER is the first Korean car to be sold exclusively online.

I will tell the story of the first-ever overseas edition of <d design travel>, a design travel book of 47 prefectures in Japan, and spend an hour working on <jeju>.

<CASPER meets d design travel!>

Editor-in-Chief Shindo used to design trucks for Nissan Motor Company in Japan.

So wherever he goes, he sees cars and often photographs them.

On April 22, when he first came to Jeju for the <d design travel> workshop, he saw a CASPER parked near the D&DEPARTMENT Jeju store and thought it was cute, so he took a picture of it.

As it turned out, the first rental car for the editorial department was a CASPER, which I, the Korean representative of the project, had rented.

That was the first car that Editor-in-Chief Shindo drove overseas with an international driver's license, and it became Hyundai's CASPER.

CASPER, the car chosen and loved by the editor-in-chief of a Japanese design travel book!

As a Korean, I felt a sense of pride.

When I looked at the website, I found out that CASPER has a special color called 'Bijarim Khaki Matte'. As soon as I saw the name of the color, I thought, "Oh, this car is for the newsroom!" because Bijarim means the forest on Jeju Island.

On the last day of my first trip to Jeju, I shared the story with my editor-in-chief and said, "We need to send an email to Hyundai's CASPER representative! After returning to Seoul and Tokyo, I created a pitch, found Hyundai's domestic marketing manager, and sent it out. A day later, I got a call from Hyundai saying that they would cooperate and support us with the car.

Shindo, the editor-in-chief, said that when he sent the proposal, he was interested in how a Korean company would react, since such support is almost impossible in Japan.

He thought that if they accepted, it would show the character and personality of Korea.

Although the expectation of support/sponsorship was 50%, they were genuinely happy to come to the second meeting with the decision to support the vehicle.

In the midst of a grueling reporting schedule, it was a joy I couldn't have imagined.

Editor-in-chief Shindo crosses the border to meet LONG LIFE DESIGN in Jeju.

That's how the two <d design travel jeju> editors met, traveling around the island in the most unique vehicle,

The Story of CASPER and the Bijarim Khaki Matte Color

Editor Jina: Question 1) The Hyundai CASPER and the Bijarim Khaki Matte color - which one was the best?

Which one was your favorite?

Hideto Shindo, Editor-in-Chief: First of all, I really liked the size and design.

I usually like the khaki color,

On this trip to Jeju, we rented a car and used the CASPER white and khaki colors,

In the last week of our joint reporting, with the support of Hyundai Motor Company

<Bijarim Khaki Matte> color with the support of Hyundai.

We were curious to see how the Bijarim Khaki Matte color compared to the regular khaki color.

Even in Japan, the number of khaki colored vehicles has been increasing lately,

Since it is a military color, it is often used for military vehicles,

I think there are only a few cars with a reasonable design.

So when I saw the CASPER

I thought the khaki color would look good on a small car without being heavy,

and I thought it would be great for everyday use.

Especially for a foreign driver like me, I thought it would be perfect for driving in Korea.

The <Bijarim Khaki Matte> color was also attractive.

It doesn't go against the nature of Jeju.

The front of the car blends in naturally,

I wanted to take a lot of pictures with the natural scenery behind me.

In fact, it is rare in Japan for a car to be named after a specific region or place.

in Japan, so I was even more curious about how Hyundai thought about and developed the name.

I became even more curious.

As we drove around the mountains, we stopped the car for a while.

(left)Driving was something I was worried and anxious about before I came to Jeju, but as a foreigner, I got to know, experience, and adapt to the "difference". (In fact, I needed some time to adjust after returning from Tokyo.)

(right)The editorial staff's first rental car, CASPER! Those blue protectors on the doors of so many cars in Korea, hilarious. Of course, I took them off as soon as I got the green khaki matte car (Design! It's important!).

Editor Jina: Question 2) In Jeju, what was your experience with this car?

Editor-in-Chief Hideto Shindo: The unfamiliar traffic rules,

It was my first time driving a left-hand drive car, but driving this car brought back the feeling I had when I first drove a car in the past.

That feeling of "Driving is fun!

Now, not only Korea and Japan, but the whole world is an automobile society.

It's inconvenient not to have a car.

Perhaps traveling outside the area where you live and have lived can start with choosing a car to go there?

When you leave the airport, you turn around and there are cars everywhere.

That's how I think the experience of a country's <design> starts with its cars.

I think CASPER can reintroduce the "joy of driving" to people from overseas and even to Japanese people who may find it difficult to drive left and right.

Currently in Jeju, it is difficult for a foreigner with a foreign driver's license to rent a car alone (the first driver in the car must have a Korean driver's license).

If circumstances permit, I hope you will be able to drive this car.

Coming from Tokyo, I'll long remember the feeling of being blown away by the forest tunnels I encountered while driving Jeju's 516 Road or 1100 Road, the road that passes the highest elevation in Jeju.

Straight, wide-open roads - something you don't often find in downtown Tokyo.

As an international driver, CASPER made me want to explore every corner of Jeju Island even more.

Named after 'Bijarim', a natural resort on Jeju Island

<Bijarim Khaki Matte>, a color named after a natural resort in Jeju,

I also realized how special Jeju Island is in Korea.

A car that makes you think of Jeju!

In fact, I thought I would like to drive this car in Japan.

(Editor-in-Chief Shindo also wanted to know if it was possible to buy this car and have it delivered in Japan, even though the steering wheel position is different).

But the CASPER <Bijarim Khaki Matte> color is for Jeju, and I think it's best for driving in Jeju.

Personally, I think it would be best if the staff of D&DEPARTMENT's Jeju store, which discovers, connects, and introduces "local" places and people, could drive it when they go to Jeju producers.

CASPER was the first car I ever drove with an international driver's license.

The time I spent driving with the Jeju scenery outside the window and the voice of the navigation system,

and the voice of the navigation system left me with fond memories. by Shindo

(left) CASPER can be found all over Jeju Island. This is the typical tomboy khaki color. I met her in the parking lot of Jeju's Dongmun market. Can you see the difference from the photos above?

(RIGHT) Unlike the rental car, this model had a sunroof. We also took a souvenir photo of the two editors.

<d design travel> is based on the following criteria

-Unique to the region.

-Something that sends a valuable message about the region.

-Something local people do.

-Affordable.

-Have a design theme.

Something that can be included in the book,

On the second leg of the trip, I was given a vehicle to drive around in.

There were days when I traveled from Jeju to Seogwipo in one day.

On April 22, I visited a cafe recommended in the workshop that began this book,

It happened to be a good match for the vehicle, so I was able to take some pictures.

Before running the cafe, the couple behind it worked in the music industry,

so they made a record during the pandemic.

The newsroom bought the CD,

and when we looked on YouTube, there was music.

Today we're going to play some summer music.

<Hyundai Motor in Seoul>

Before departing for Tokyo, we visited the Hyundai Motorstudio

<The Time of the Pony> Exhibition!

banner image

As of June 2023, there are no direct flights from Tokyo to Jeju.

So editor-in-chief Shindo traveled from Haneda to Gimpo and from Gimpo to Jeju on a business trip.

Before returning home, I made a stopover in Seoul, where I visited the exhibition

<"Pony's Time" exhibition at Hyundai Motor Studio Seoul.

In 1974, Hyundai's Pony made its debut,

Korea's first unique model, it changed the landscape of the city.

The exhibition is organized on the 1st to 5th floors of Hyundai Motor Studio,

the history of the <PONY> and the Ioniq 5, which is currently being produced by Hyundai,

IONIQ 5, which is the successor of the car.

This is how a car exhibition can be done,

The way and method of not forgetting history, continuing the essence and passing it on to a new generation

in this exhibition.

A single car is not just a means of transportation.

It made me think about the many roads I've traveled in this car and the memories I've made in this car.

<If you could take one car in Jeju>

"From a vehicle that moves people to a space that moves the heart," reads Hyundai's website.

To produce the first overseas issue of <d design travel>, the two editors traveled between Seoul and Tokyo, away from their respective lives and workplaces, often more than an hour by car, often on the same day, and often not in close proximity.

Nevertheless, we felt comfortable in the car.

The CASPER vehicle was a great help to us in exploring, reporting, and getting to know Jeju.

Having a car in Bijarim Khaki Matte  color made us feel the "Jeju-ness" we were talking about.

Once again, we would like to thank Hyundai Motor Company for their support and cooperation.
