Hello everyone!

This is the editorial team working on the Jeju issue of <d design travel>.

After the last workshop, the two editors went back to Seoul and Tokyo, and through a lot of emails and Google Drive to share their research, travel plans, and interview schedules.

On the evening of Monday, May 8, the team from Seoul and Tokyo reunited on Jeju Island. From that day until May 22, the team will spend the first few days of the trip.

We will send you editorial stories throughout the week.

The "d mark review" will also be decided by seeing it for ourselves.

I'm back in Jeju. With about a week's notice, I started working in earnest on Jeju Island to create a book based on our past research.

I had the feeling of "I've been back here again," just as I had when I'd already traveled around Japan. After a week, I've gotten used to the direction (Japan's traffic is left-hand drive/Korea's is right-hand drive), and I think I'll gradually get used to it in the future. In fact, I've been driving around in a rental car since yesterday. Even though it's right-hand drive and the traffic laws are different, I'm currently obsessed with the modern-day CASPER (laughs).

By living there for a long time, <d design travel> learns about the individuality of the region and searches for the necessary designs.

In a way, I think a special relationship with my real home, Japan, which can be called a job, has gradually begun.

And even if it is "Jeju, Korea," there are experiences that appeal to me as a Japanese person that are no different from "somewhere" in Japan, except that I don't understand the language. Or rather, the joy of seeing my first 'design' that doesn't exist in Japan may be more than the coverage of Japan.

The reporting has just begun and I'm looking forward to tomorrow.

Voicy

This is an audio diary of the editor-in-chief of <d design travel>.

As editor-in-chief, I try to be as "honest" as possible, including what impressed me, what made me happy, what I struggled with, and what I worried about during the previous day's coverage.

the D&D Jeju Society

As I've been working on the book, I've created a group on Facebook to keep track of my "design travels" and to share my daily reflections on what I've learned and been impressed by along the way.

Actually, it's the "Flavors of Jeju" section, which is updated daily. By the category of food, alcohol, what is a unique Korean way of drinking 'bomb shot' that mixes soju(Korean distilled liquor) and beer? I was a little confused by the bomb shot at first, but I actually like it!

I'm also surprised by the soups that I drink almost every day. Yesterday I thought Jeju's bracken soup was delicious, but today I found one with seaweed in it (momguk) and it was just as good. I also tried 'Omegitteok' at Dongmun market, where I always go to eat when I come to Jeju.

The locally produced fruits such as Hallabong, a famous citrus fruit in Jeju, and Apple Mango are also delicious, and Kaksu-kang, the hangover drink, contains Jeju mandarin oranges, so I thought it had a Jeju character.

If I had to choose a favorite, it would be the Dombe pork from Hogeun-dong, which was brought to me by the president of D&DEPARTMENT Seoul, Mr. Bae, who lives in Jeju.

It was interesting to hear the history of "Dombe" (which means "cutting board" in Jeju). Jeju women were busy working at sea and raising their children, so they couldn't spend much time in the kitchen. They just simply boiled Jeju pork, sliced it, and served it on a cutting board.

I guess "Jeju's Best Food" will be updated in the future. I'm looking forward to next week. by Shindo

<This week's editorial focuses on...Music of Jeju>

 <d design travel> is

a design travel guide book started in 2009 by designer Nagaoka Kenmei(D&DEPARTMENT founder).

The book features a total of six categories of places to visit (sightseeing spots, restaurants, shops, cafes, hotels, and local people), and introduces four of them with d mark reviews.

Inside the magazine, there are sections for "Local Books" and "Local Music".

This week, I submitted a manuscript for the <Books in Jeju> section from a bookstore in Jeju, and the manuscript has arrived.

Today, we're introducing `Aewol Sunset' by Jang Pil-soon, a musician who lives and works in Jeju. *Aewol is one of the seaside area of Jeju.

It seems like there are about 1,000 pieces of a digi-puzzle called Jeju Island, because I feel like I'm putting the pieces together every day.

I spend every day asking, thinking, and answering questions with editor-in-chief Shindo, such as what is "Jeju-ness" and "Does it have a design?

There was also the joy of finding an out-of-print book in Jeju's unmanned bookstore < Chaek Yakbang(Book Apothecary)>.

While working on this book, I realized that <Haenyeo> is only distributed in Korea and Japan. *Haenyeo is a diver who goes deep into the sea to collect abalone and seafood.

The book will be released in the spring of 2024, so it's still a long way off,

But I will continue to work diligently to write about the things I encountered and was moved by, as well as the things the two of us in the editorial team think about in Jeju.
