<d design travel JEJU> Editorial Note 01

<d design travel JEJU> Editorial Note 01

Hello readers!

I'm Jina Lee, the editor of <d design travel JEJU>.

On April 22, we kicked off what will be a year-long journey with a workshop at D&DEPARTMENT JEJU.

This note is dedicated to those who wanted to attend the workshop but could not make it,

and to those who are looking forward to seeing how this Jeju booklet will turn out.

I would like to walk you through the process in which we discovered the essence of Jeju, as is captured in our Jeju book.

These editorial notes are written by Jina Lee (Calling Books), who is the Korean reporter and editor for this project.

I hope you will look forward to each issue.

Now, the <d design travel> editorial team would like to send you the stories we discovered.

<d design travel JEJU> Workshop Review

As per our tradition, we started our "d design travel" workshop in a designated local area, with local artisans and participants who share and love the philosophy behind D&DEPARTMENT.

And so the Jeju book launched on April 22, 2023 at D&DEPARTMENT JEJU.

There were 30 participants in the pre-questionnaire and 70 participants on the day of the workshop, including staff.

The participants included Jeju locals who manage hostels, writers who create newsletters about Jeju Island, and Seoulites who are passionate about D&DEPARTMENT.

The first part of the workshop was an introduction of d design travel by editor-in-chief Shindo and the perspective from which the book is created (translated by Songyi Kim of D&DEPARTMENT SEOUL).

In part two, we gathered in groups and discussed our favorite places within the 6 categories, and after the conversation, we settled on two d MARK candidates and presented them.

(Honestly, I was quite worried about the atmosphere because Koreans don't like presentations or discussions, those who came out of interest and love, we held a very engaging conversation!)

The final part of the workshop included time for networking, which included snacks and drinks from the D&DEPARTMENT JEJU store.

And so began our journey through design, a design journey in search of "JEJU's character".

Below are a few photos from the event.

In the photo are questions we asked on the day of the workshop as well as the questionnaire we distributed beforehand.

We were encouraged by the detailed answers and the stories of Jeju that were shared by the participants.

Perhaps what is not shown in the photo is that the space was filled with enthusiasm.

The workshop provided a time and space to discuss and think deeply on"what is truly unique to Jeju" as well as "what Jeju's unique appearance is."

As a member of the editorial team, I was also moved by this journey which all began with a set of questions and concerns.

Each book began with questionnaires and workshops with local residents.

<d design travel KYOTO> has recently been translated and published in Korean.

<Show on map, try to explore>

After the workshop, the editors plotted all these locations on Google Maps. (About 200 flags were planted).

I can't reveal all the places we chose before the book's release, but I'll explain the points of view.

It was my first overseas trip to Korea in about four years, and I took on the challenge with some nervousness.

It's a story of my personal experience, and it's also a challenge for <d design travel> as the first overseas issue. Even though I was born and raised in Japan, (D DESIGN TRAVEL has traveled to all 47 prefectures in Japan and has now published 32 issues). In Japan, there was something comforting about common sense, even if it was new to me. But in Korea, as a foreigner, that common sense doesn't work.

Thus began my journey of becoming a true outsider and discovering the real Korea, the real Jeju. Just like in Japan, we started with a workshop with locals called an open edit meeting. It was held at the D&DEPARTMENT JEJU store, where more than 70 people gathered. In addition, the participants thought about "the land" and "the design" even more than in Japan, and I could feel the anticipation of the "Jeju Issue".

We look forward to working with you, Jeju, for about a year to complete the issue.

Voicy

This is an audio diary of the editor-in-chief of <d design travel>.

As editor-in-chief, I try to be as "honest" as possible, including what impressed me, what made me happy, what I struggled with, and what I worried about during the previous day's coverage.

the D&D Jeju Society

As I've been working on the book, I've created a group on Facebook to keep track of my "design travels" and to share my daily reflections on what I've learned and been impressed by along the way.

It's a place the editorial team fell in love with.

After my first trip and interview, I visited the exhibition at the Insa Art Center 'Jeju Gallery' in Seoul. (~2023/5/15)

<This week's editorial focuses on...Music of Jeju>

<d design travel> is a design travel book started by designer Kenmei Nagaoka (D&DEPARTMENT) in 2009.

In the book, places are divided into six categories (sightseeing, restaurants, shops, cafes, hotels, and local people) and presented in four parts. Inside the magazine there are sections on <Local Books> and <Local Music>.

We've been searching for and listening to 'Jeju music'.

This week's song is "April Dance" by Lucidfall, who currently lives on Jeju Island and also sang at the memorial service for the victims of the April 3 incident.
