This Urushi (Japanese lacquer) bowl is a masterpiece by Japan Crafts Oshima. Japan Crafts Oshima is a "Yamanaka lacquerware" studio with a long history of more than 100 years in Ishikawa Prefecture.
Highly skilled craftsmen hollow out the wood, and shave it with a pottery wheel to produce the smooth surface. It provides a soft feel in the mouth. Since wood exhibits a low thermal conductivity, you can hold this bowl in your hands even when you put hot food such as various soups or noodles in it.
This bowl can represent the beautiful grain pattern of Zelkova wood by the special technique called "Mehajiki-nuri" (the application of lacquer to open-grained wood in such a manner that it is repelled by the grain, which thus remains visible).
It received the Good Design Award, one of the most prestigious design awards in Japan.
